Getting Started with Van Builds

If you’re just starting to research van conversions, the amount of information out there can be overwhelming. These docs are designed to give you the technical foundation without the fluff marketing or YouTube speculation.

How Van Build Systems Connect

A van conversion isn’t one project — it’s several systems that need to work together:
  1. Electrical powers everything: lights, fans, fridge, charging, water pump, heater. It’s the backbone of the build and usually the most complex system.
  2. Plumbing handles fresh water supply, grey water drainage, and (in some builds) black water. The electrical system powers your water pump, so these two are tightly connected.
  3. Interior covers cabinetry, insulation, flooring, walls, and layout. This is where the build becomes livable.
  4. Exterior includes roof-mounted gear (solar panels, fan, rack), awnings, and any body modifications.
Every decision in one system affects the others. Bigger electrical means more solar panels on the roof. A full bathroom means larger water tanks and more complex plumbing. That’s why planning matters.

What Drives Build Cost

Van build pricing comes down to three tiers based on scope and complexity:
TierPackage TotalWhat You Get
Basic15K15K–30KSolid foundation — bed platform, basic electrical, simple water setup, insulation and panels
Standard35K35K–55KFull-featured living space — kitchen, upgraded electrical with solar, proper plumbing, quality finishes
Premium60K60K–100K+Everything — full bathroom, large solar array, lithium batteries, custom cabinetry, premium materials throughout
These are labor + materials costs (vehicle not included). For a detailed breakdown by system, check the budgeting guide.
